1. FREE tuition

As of 2014, the German government got rid of tuition fees for all students (yes, including international students!) enrolled in public universities. Luckily, there are more public universities — schools funded by the government — in Germany than private universities — independent schools that rely on funding from tuition fees. However, you’ll need to pay tuition fees if you attend a private university. Some graduate programs may also charge you tuition fees as well, so make sure you do your research!

Unlike in other countries, you won’t have to worry about exorbitant tuition fees due to your status as an international student. However, while your tuition fees are free, you’ll still need to pay a small amount of money known as a semester contribution. These small fees will cover public transportation, administrative costs, student union costs, and more.

2. Study in English

If you want to study in Germany, but the thought of pursuing a degree in a different language scares you, then don’t worry! There are programs in German universities that are offered in English! You can study in the language you’re more comfortable in, while learning German (if you want) at your own pace. Keep in mind that most undergrad programs are offered in German, while many more post-grad programs are offered in English. Some schools may require you to provide proof of efficiency in German, so make sure you check with schools you’re interested in. 3. No student visa required

Typically, when you apply to a school outside of Canada you’ll need a student visa, which can take months to prep, apply, and receive an answer. But, as a Canadian studying in Germany, you don’t need to apply for a student visa!

So, what do you need to study in Germany if not a visa? If you’ll be staying in Germany for longer than three months, you’ll need to apply for a residence permit within 90 days of entering the country. This will allow you to stay in Germany for the duration of your studies. Make sure you reach out to your school and local embassy to confirm this process.

To apply for a residence permit, you’ll usually need the following:

• a valid passport
• proof of enrollment at your school
• proof of registration from the Residents’ Registration Office
• proof of health insurance valid in Germany (not typically offered by universities)
• a blocked account

What is a blocked account? It’s a special bank account for international students in Germany which acts as proof of your financial resources. You’ll deposit the required amount of money needed to cover your living expenses for one year. The amount you’ll need is approximately 11,208 EUR ($16,527 CAD), which you can withdraw 934 EUR ($1,377 CAD) each month.

4. Travel opportunities

When you’re studying and living outside of Canada, you’re going to want to explore as much as you can with the time you have. Luckily, Germany has plenty of great places to explore, like Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne, and Konstanz.
